Chapter Seven
From across the tent, Justus caught sight of Tuesday with many others, dancing with Joshua James in her arms, and his heart gave a tug. She was bent over the baby and her lips were moving as if she was singing to him.
“Excuse me a minute,” he said to the neighbor man he’d been talking to. He started through the crowd, weaving through groups of people and giving his own momma a wink as he passed. She shook her head in that affectionate way she always did when one of her boys teased her.
When he reached Tuesday, the song came to an end.
Her taste still lingered in his mind, and as he stared into her eyes, it built again. “Can I cut in?” he said, low.
She laughed but it had a hint of nervousness to it. “I don’t know. This young fella’s a good dancer.”
“I’d like to try to top him.” He rubbed the boy’s head.
“You rub his head like he’s a genie lamp and you get three wishes.”
He gave her a crooked smile. “Do I get the wishes?”
At that moment, someone moved close to them, and he saw it was Tuesday’s momma with her arms out to take the baby.
“He’s getting hungry, Momma. I was about to feed him,” Tuesday objected.
She flapped a hand to wave her away. “Let me do it while I can. You two go on and have fun.” She disappeared back through the crowd.
Leaving them standing there staring at each other. Her words resonated within him. Have fun right now could mean so many things.
Sitting out in the field watching the sun sink slowly behind the land.
Dancing with her close, his cheek against hers. Or finding that hay bale and making good on his promise.
Maybe all three.
He took her fingers and drew her arm up around his neck, swaying her into his hold as a new song began.
She curled her hand around his nape and looked up into his eyes. “You’re a pretty good dancer.”
“As good as Joshua James?”
She smiled. “Almost.”
He wasn’t one to move in a tight circle on the dance floor, so he steered her by another couple. The girl reached out and slapped him. He narrowed his eyes at her and tugged her hair as he rotated past.
Tuesday stiffened in his hold. “Who was that?”
“Little sister. She’s a pain in the ass.” He grinned.
“Sister? I didn’t know you had any.”
“Three, all just coming of age, but they’ve been know-it-alls since birth. How about you?” He realized he might have touched on a sensitive subject, since he knew she’d adopted her sister’s baby.
“Just my sister I mentioned before. She’s also a know-it-all.”
He nodded and pulled her closer as he whirled her around the makeshift dance floor.
“You might be better than Joshua James. His footwork’s lacking.”
He chuckled. Looking deep into her eyes, he said what he’d wanted to get her alone to say all evening. “Tuesday, I want you. Will you come away with me?”
She tripped but he kept hold of her. “Justus…”
He stopped dancing and tipped her head up to meet her gaze.
